Damilola (not real name) has always dreamt of being popular in life and she had gone into several ways of achieving her aim. When the time came for her to go into higher institution, she not only chose one of the popular private universities in the country but also chose an equally very popular and influential course, Mass Communication. With her gaining admission into the Seventh Day Adventist Church run Babcock University located in the rustic community of Ilishan Remo in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, the young girl’s road to stardom seemed to have begun but little did she known that she would be a popular figure sooner than her imagination can run albeit for the wrong reason. But unknown the boy was being courted by one of the girls in the most dreaded female cult group in the university, the Jezebel. Wale had pestered Damilola for love since she debuted in the university but only succeeded in winning her love in August 2011. Apparently she must have been warned by members of the group to desist from going out with the boy, but Damilola must have taken the warning with levity until the Jezebel girls decided to strike in broad daylight.  She confirmed that the Jezebel girls did warned her but she told them that Wale was just a friend not a lover. The D-day for her came on 11th October 2011 when the Jezebel girls struck. Three of them accosted on the corridor of the Mass Communication Department and before one can say Jack Robinson, they have left their indelible mark on Damilola which will forever be a scar for her in her entire lifetime. In a scene that was normally reserves for action movies, Damilola was held and pinned to the ground by two of the Jezebel girls while the other one swiftly removed her pants, opened her legs wide and poured pepper into her vagina. In a rather confirmation of the laxity security in place at the university, the girls even had the time to take pictures of the event and downloaded them into the internet. The Premier investigation revealed that the school authorities were not even aware of the incident until the video of the incident started travelling from one student’s phone to the other while it became a major item on Facebook, Youtube and Twitter. That was when the school authorities sprang into action and set up a panel to investigate the matter and come up with appropriate recommendations. Investigations revealed that the Jezebel girls attacked Damilola because as a 200 level student she was not supposed to snatch the boyfriend of her senior. Damilola insisted that Wale was not her boyfriend but a mere friend. At the end of the sitting of the disciplinary committee set up by the university authorities, the Jezebel girls were expelled but sources stated that they must have got new admission into a public university in the south south. However, in spite of the culprits being expelled, Damilola is still living with the after effect of the gory incident. In the first instance, she was left so much in pains that she had to be flown abroad for treatment and it took about a month before she was proved medically alright to come back home. Sources told our correspondent that she still complains of pains in her vagina nowadays. When she returned to the school campus, Damilola had a new name waiting for her – the pepper girl, a name which continues to spread like wildfire in the harmatan as it became the most popular name in the university campus.        Damilola became so distraught that she could no longer concentrate on her studies again as the psychological effect of the incident and the attendant negative popularity she gained through it weighed her down. The result being that she had to be taken to the guidance and counseling department in the university for a psychologist to work on her.               Presently the university is battling with its image problem as the news continues to spread despite all efforts made at removing the news from the public focus. First, all traces of the news were removed from the internet and other social network like Youtube, facebook and twitter while the students of the university have been warned to remove the obnoxious materials from every communications gadgets in their possessions. The students have equally been warned that they should desist from calling the traumatized girl the nickname of pepper girl. “We have been warned not to say anything about the incident or make any reference to it or else we will be expelled,” one of the students of the university told our correspondent last weekend. There was no official of the university ready to speak with our correspondent last weekend as their mobile phones were not going when The Premier called. Investigations revealed that palpable tension reigns in the university campus as none of the students knows where or when the remaining members of the Jezebel group would strike as there have been speculations that they are threatening to strike again on behalf of their members who have been expelled by the university authorities.

JONATHAN’S OIL SCAM!!!

 

The public sitting of the ad-hoc committee set up by the House of Representatives to investigate the spending of the oil subsidy money led by Honourable Farouk Lawan has become a forum for mindboggling revelations on how the tax payers’ money in Nigeria is wasted on frivolous things by those given by the people to take care of the money and spend it justifiably to improve the lives of the tax payers.

At the sitting since the past two weeks, there were contradictions on the actual amount spent on subsidy by government officials who should know. What Nigerians were made to believe prior to the public sitting of the committee was that N1.3 trillion was spent on oil subsidy last year. However, when the Minister of Finance and coordinating Minister of the country’s Economic Team, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala gave her testimony at the sitting she said the total amount spent was N1.4 trillion.

However, when the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, gave her testimony towards the end of last week, she said that the actual amount spent was N1.7 trillion noting that what was given by Okonjo-Iweala was the money spent between January and October, 2011.

The committee chairman, Farouk Lawan was forced to acknowledge the fact that since the oil subsidy money continues to increase, members of the committee and Nigerians in general would not be surprised when another government official come and give another figure on what was spent on oil subsidy last year.

However, both Okonjo-Iweala and Allison-Madueke did not disagreed on one thing the amount of money spent between January and February 2011 on oil subsidy. Both agreed that N245 billion was disbursed as subsidy during the period according to their testimony before the House of Representatives committee. The astronomical subsidy deduction reached an all time high between February and June.

Investigation by The Premier revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan was hell bent on winning the 2011 presidential election and become the country’s substantive president haven been told by his kitchen cabinet that the Yar-Adua mandate he was operating does not give him full authority and responsibility.

Jonathan’s people also told him that he must first of all pick the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket as a prelude to winning the election but they also told him of the formidable opposition coming from the North which seemed to have buried its differences by unanimously picking a consensus candidate in former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Jonathan was told that the name of the game is money and the man from Utuoke in Bayelsa was ready to outspend every other contestant to achieve his aim.

On January 11 2011, about two days to the national convention of the ruling PDP where the party’s presidential flag bearer would be elected, a whopping N150 billion was withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for what the government called ‘classified expenditure’.

Unknown to many, that ‘classified expenditure’ was the fast approaching PDP presidential primaries. The Jonathan loyalists have stumbled on the report that the Atiku camp is giving out US$3, 000, about N.4million then to each of the 3, 000 delegates expected at the national convention.

To outplay and outsmart Atiku, the Jonathan camp gave out US$7, 000 more than a million naira to each of the delegate in addition to paying each delegate N250, 000 for accommodation and transport. In all Jonathan spent N4.13 billion on the presidential primaries broken down to US$21 million (N3.381 billion) in hard currency for delegate and local currency of N750 million as allowance for transport and accommodation.

Having won the presidential primaries of the ruling party, the Jonathan camp felt there was need to pacify the north which is visibly angry that it has been denied the chance to rule Nigeria again. That was when the idea of a consultation tour of the north was muted. There commenced a tour and visitations to some prominent personalities and groups in the north which cost the presidential team N500 million at the end of January, 2011.

The month of February heralded a frenetic pace in the presidential campaign team activities. First, a fleet of private jets were hired from four private carriers: Kings Aviation, Wings Aviation, Top Brazz and Overland.  In normal time, the jets are leased out at the rate of US$6, 000 per hour per jet. But the Nigeria election certainly should be treated as an unusual time hence the Jonathan team paid US$10, 000 per hour to each of the jets leased. What this translated to was that the presidential team paid N100 million naira daily to the leased jets and with the jets leased for a total of 70 hours, a whopping N10.5 billion belonging to Nigerian tax payers was paid to the operators of the leased jets.

On February 14^th 2011, some prominent billionaires met at the Eko Hotels in Lagos and at the end of their meeting, the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) was formed and given the mandate to raise more money to oil Jonathan’s campaign. Present at the meeting were billionaires like: Femi Otedola, Jimoh Ibrahim, Sayyu Dantata, Tony Elumelu, Emeka Offor and Kasim Bukar among others.

The formation and mandate given to the PCC led to the crazy oil subsidy money paid out by the federal government as most members of the PCC are oil marketers. Crazy and stupendous bills were given to the federal government as subsidy money and the federal government not only paid, it paid on time.

For instance, Sayyu Dantata’s MRS Oil requested for payment of N225 billion, Otedola’s AP wanted N104 billion and they were all paid. Most mysterious was the demand by a construction company, Pinnacle Construction which sought payment of a colossal N300 billion and the company was paid with immediate alacrity. Up till today, Nigerians continue to wonder how and where a construction company got involved in oil importation to the extent that it is seeking payment for such a huge sum.

More astounding was the claim by a prominent member of the presidential campaign team and now Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Odua-Ogiemwonyi that she had spent her personal N5 billion on the campaign and she was paid immediately. Stella Odua’s company where she was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Sea Petroleum and Gas submitted an oil subsidy claim of N5 billion and the money was paid.

With the fake oil subsidy fund readily available, the Jonathan team continued its lavish spending. On March 16^th 2011, N55 million was paid to a media company for a single slot of advert. By the end of March, a total of N7.3 billion has been paid on adverts alone.

Apart from this, on March 28^th 2011, the Jonathan team gave out a car and bus each to the 36 state chapters of the campaign team as well as the chapter in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Apart from this, each state chapter was also given N14 million which translated to N518 million. Add this to the cost of the cars and buses, it meant more than one billion naira was spent on this single exercise. Between April 12^th and 15^th 2011, the presidential team disbursed N107 billion. So it was no surprise to insiders in the Jonathan and those who are close to the seat of power when subsidy payment rose astronomically from N245 billion to N1.3 trillion between March and August before finally concluding at N1.7 trillion at the end of 2011.

Comparison of payment of subsidy by the federal government from 2006 to 2010 revealed that the claim for the period between March and August 2011 was mindboggling. In 2006, subsidy was made for 26.9 million liters of petroleum products in which N200 billion was paid as subsidy. In 2008, there was claim for 33.4 million liters of petroleum products in which N630 billion was paid as subsidy while in 2010 the claim was even less than 33 million liters of petroleum products in which a little over N600 million was paid.

It was obvious that the Jonathan administration realized it has indeed overshoot its financial limit on the issue of subsidy payment hence its insistence that subsidy should be removed. Towards the end of last year, there was a crisis between the federal government and the 36 states of the federation over the sharing of the revenue of the money accruing to the federation account. On not more than one occasion, the 36 state commissioners of finance boycotted the Federal Allocation Council (FAC) meeting. The reason being that the federal insisted on withdrawing N100 billion for subsidy before the money could be shared a decision that annoyed the state governments. What many Nigerians never knew was the fact that the money being deducted by the federal government was meant to shore up its revenue as it was obvious that huge sum of money has been expended on the election. As at the time Jonathan was sworn-in, the Nigerian treasury was almost empty as virtually the treasury has been emptied to prosecute the election.

If Nigerians are wondering how the spurious N1.7 trillion oil subsidy money was spent, they should ask President Jonathan and his friends.

73 Killed, 1000 Injured, As Egyptian Soccer Match Turns Violent

Soccer fans rushed the field after the home team won an unexpected victory over Egypt’s top squad Wednesday, setting off clashes and a stampede that left at least 73 people dead and 1,000 injured in Port Said, a Mediterranean port city, officials said.

Associated Press, AP reports that it was the worst incident of soccer violence in Egypt and the deadliest worldwide since 1996.

The melee broke out after fans of Al-Masry, the home team in Port Said, stormed the field after a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, Egypt’s top team. Al-Masry supporters hurled sticks and stones as they chased players and fans from the rival team, who ran toward the exits to escape, according to witnesses.

State TV showed footage in which the Al-Ahly players were seen rushing for their locker room as fist fights broke out among the hundreds of fans swarming on to the field. Some men had to rescue a manager from the losing team as he was being beaten. Black-clothed police officers stood by, appearing overwhelmed.

Egypt’s state prosecutor ordered an immediate investigation into the violence, and the Egypt Football Association ordered an indefinite suspension of the annual championship. The parliament said it would convene an emergency session.

State TV reported the casualty toll, citing a health ministry official. A medic in the Port Said morgue, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorised to release the information, gave the same figures and said some of the dead in the clashes were security officers.

It was the deadliest incident of soccer violence since 16 October, 1996, when at least 78 people died and 180 others were injured in a stampede at a stadium in Guatemala City before a World Cup qualifying match between Guatemala and Costa Rica.

One witness said people threw stones, sticks and bottles at their rivals and injured some players.

The witness was speaking on condition of anonymity because he feared retribution. He said the atmosphere was already tense in the field before the game as one Al-Ahly fan raised a banner insulting supporters of the home team.

The players were later taken to the locker room for protection, Sayed Hamdi, an Al-Ahly player, told state TV. “It was an atmosphere of terrorism,” said Hamdi.

Hesham Sheiha, a health ministry official, told state TV, most of the death were caused by concussions, deep cuts to the heads and suffocation from the stampede.

Boko Haram Again as 6 Kill In Maiduguri print

At least six persons have been killed by Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Northeast Nigeria.

The attack Thursday took place at Kabar Maila Ward in Shehuri North, Maiduguri.

A statement issued by the Joint Military Task Force, JTF, spokesman, Lt. Col. Hassan Mohammed, indicates that there were several bomb explosions in the early hours of Thursday in Maiduguri, while some unexploded bombs were defused by the JTF with no casualty recorded.

The release stated: “In Kabar Maila in Shehuri North, six persons were killed. Preliminary investigations reveal that the six deceased persons were suspected to have been slaughtered by persons suspected to be their fellow sect members.”

The release further states: “the incident occurred in the area where 11 sect members had an encounter with the JTF troops last weekend. The killing may have been as a result of division among sect members.”

It states that JTF will continue to be proactive in dealing with Boko Haram and advised the people to be security conscious.

Appeal Court dismisses Suswam’s prayers against ACN, ANPP

The Court of Appeal, Makurdi Division, yesterday dismissed the appeals by Governor Gabriel Suswam and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the election petitions of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) over time-frame (180 days).

The justices held that the petitions should be heard on merit as the Supreme Court has directed. 

Justice Monica Mensen Dongbon ruled that the decision of the Supreme Court to send back the petitions for a re-trial has made the 180-day time frame a non-issue.

She dismissed the appeal, saying it lacked merit.

The Benue State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had dismissed the motion by Suswam seeking the order of the tribunal to strike out the petition of Prof Steven Torkuma Ugba over time frame.

The motion failed as the tribunal, presided over by Justice Mohammed Halima, struck it out and proceeded to the pre-hearing before the governor challenged the decision of the lower tribunal at the Appeal Court.

The Court of Appeal also yesterday dismissed the appeal by the PDP seeking to set aside the tribunal’s decision to accept the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) inspection report conducted by the ACN.

Justice Dongbon held that “the report of the petitioner concerning inspection of INEC materials is proper and the tribunal was right in admitting it so that it can be used as evidence by the petitioner”.

In Gwer State Constituency, ACN candidate, Letta Terungwa, triumphed over PDP’s Emmanuel Ayua, while Bem Ortese (ACN) was victorious against PDP’s Mrs Theresa Ujege, for Konshisha. 

Counsel to ACN, Simon Orkuma and Andrew Wombo, described the judgment as sound.

But counsel to the PDP and Suswam, Edward Ashiekaa and Chief John Ochoga, who held brief for Chief Solo Akuma (SAN), said they would study the judgment for an appeal.

NUPENG halts strike after face-off with Shell

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers have called off their strike which began on Tuesday.

The strike was suspended on Wednesday afternoon after members of the union and the management of Shell reached an agreement.

The President, NUPENG, Mr. Achese Igwe, told our correspondent that Shell had agreed to the terms of the union, adding that the GMD, NNPC, Mr. Austin Oniwon, attended the meeting.

He said, “We have suspended the industrial action because a commitment has been made by Shell management. It was made by the MD himself and the GMD of NNPC also signed as a witness in the presence of everyone in attendance to see that these issues as regards the Shell branch vis-à-vis employee statements pertaining the nonpayment of those that were retired from Shell or sacked indiscriminately are all being paid.”

NUPENG had accused Shell of anti-labour activities, demanding compensation for contracted employees of the oil firm laid off without benefits after serving the company for over 15 years.

ASUU Calls Off Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, today suspended the protracted nationwide strike it embarked upon last year.

National Executive Council of ASUU meeting in Abuja today has resolved to suspend the on-going strike action.

ASUU NIGERIA tweeted this:

“We want to thank you all for the understanding thus far. All lecturers are to resume immediately. ASUU will not relent on her efforts to rescue the educational system by pressing home the demands necessary at all times.”

Opera singer Camilla Williams dies at 92

 

Camilla Williams became a strong advocate for civil rights

Camilla Williams, the first black woman to appear in a leading role with a major US opera company has died in Indiana aged 92.

She had been suffering from cancer, according to Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where Williams became the first black professor of voice.
The singer made her debut in May 1946 in the title role of Madam Butterfly with the New York City Opera.
She also became a strong advocate for civil rights.
"It's impossible to overstate how important that was for the music scene in New York, for African-American singers, and for American singers," F Paul Driscoll, the editor-in-chief of Opera News, told the Washington Post.
Williams' debut performance came nearly nine years before Marian Anderson became the first African-American singer to appear at New York's more prestigious Metropolitan Opera.
A New York Times review of Williams at the time, said the singer displayed "a vividness and subtlety unmatched by any other artist who has assayed the part here in many a year".
The following year she performed the role of Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme and in 1948 she sang the title role of Verdi's Aida.
In 1951 she sang the title female role in first complete recording of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.
A lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the singer performed in her hometown of Danville, Virginia in 1963, to raise funds to free jailed civil rights demonstrators.
She also sang the national anthem before 200,000 people at the 1963 civil rights march on Washington, immediately before Martin Luther King gave his famous I Have a Dream speech.
In 1950, she married defence lawyer Charles Beavers, whose clients included civil rights leader Malcolm X.
After Beavers' death in 1970, Williams stepped away from opera in 1971 and began teaching before eventually retiring in 1997.
Her autobiography - The Life of Camilla Williams, African American Classical Singer and Diva - was published last year.

My views on the Yoruba political leadership have been thoroughly articulated in some of my writings, prime among which was ” Afenifere: Syllabus of Errors” published by This Day (The Sunday Newspaper) on Sept 27, 1998. There was also an earlier publication in the weekly Trust entitled ” The Igbo, the Yoruba and History” (Aug. 21, 1998).

The Yoruba elite were the first, in 1962, to attempt a violent overthrow of an elected government in this country. In 1966, it was the violence in the West which provided an avenue for the putsch of 15th January. After Chief Awolowo lost to Shagari in 1983 elections, it was the discontent and bad publicity in the South-West which led to the Buhari intervention.
When Buhari jailed UPN governors like Ige and Onabanjo, the South-Western press castigated that good government and provided the right mood for IBB to take over power. As soon as IBB cleared UPN governors of charges against them in a politically motivated retrial, he became the darling of the South-West. When IBB annulled the primaries in which Adamu Ciroma and Shehu Yar Adua emerged as presidential candidates in the NRC and SDP, he was hailed by the South-West. When the same man annulled the June 12, 1993 elections in which Abiola was the front-runner, the South-West now became defenders of democracy.
When it seemed Sani Abacha was sympathetic to Abiola, the South-West supported his take-over. He was in fact invited by a prominent NADECO member to take over in a published letter shortly before the event. Even though Abiola had won the elections in the North, the North was blamed for its annulment. When Abdulsalam Abubakar started his transition, the Yoruba political leadership through NADECO presented a memorandum on a Government of National Unity that showed complete disrespect for the intelligence and liberties of other Nigerians.
Subsequently, they formed a tribal party which failed to meet minimum requirements for registration, but was registered all the same to avoid the violence that was bound to follow non-registration, given the area-boy mentality of South-West politicians. Having rejected an Obasanjo candidacy and challenged the election as a fraud in court, we now find a leading member of the AD in the government, a daughter of an Afenifere leader as Minister of State, and Awolowo´s daughter as Ambassador, all appointed by a man who won the election through fraud.
Meanwhile, nothing has been negotiated for the children of Abiola, the focus of Yoruba political activity. In return for these favours, the AD solidly voted for Evan Enwerem as Senate President. This is a man who participated in the two-million- man March for Abacha´s self-succession. He also is reputed to have hosted a meeting of governors during IBB´s transition, demanding that June 12 elections should never be de-annulled and threatening that the East would go to war if this was done. When Ibrahim Salisu Buhari was accused of swearing to a false affidavit, the Yoruba political elite correctly took up the gauntlet for his resignation.
When an AD governor, Bola Tinubu, swears to a false affidavit that he attended an Ivy League University which he did not attend, we hear excuses.
For so many years, the Yoruba have inundated this country with stories of being marginalised and of a civil service dominated by northerners through quota system. The Federal Character Commission has recently released a report which shows that the South-West accounts for 27.8% of civil servants in the range GL08 to GL14 and a full 29.5% of GL 15 and above. One zone out of six zones controls a full 30% of the civil service leaving the other five zones to share the remaining 70%. We find the same story in the economy, in academia, in parastatals.
Yet in spite of being so dominant, the Yoruba complained and complained of marginalization. Of recent, in recognition of the trauma which hit the South-West after June 12, the rest of the country forced everyone out of the race to ensure that a South-Westerner emerged, often against the best advice of political activists.
Instead of leading a path of reconciliation and strong appreciation, the Yoruba have embarked on short-sighted triumphalism, threatening other “nationalities” that they ( who after all lost the election) will protect Obasanjo ( who was forced on them). No less a person than Bola Ige has made such utterances.
