Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Sotonye Wakama
Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State,   Sotonye Wakama, and the Director of State Security Service, Samuel Tamuno,  have threatened to deal with perpetrators of political violence in the state.
They gave the warning on Wednesday at a meeting with the chairmen of the different political parties in the state.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the state, Alhaji Halilu Pai, also attended the meeting held at the Police command headquarters on Iyin Road.
A source said the meeting was called by the security agencies to stem the rising political violence ahead of the 2014 governorship election in the state.
The CP was quoted to have said, “The command is worried about the series of fighting  among supporters of some parties in the last six weeks. We feel it is necessary to call stakeholders meeting to address the problem together.
“The police will not hesitate to deal with anybody caught perpetrating any act capable of undermining the peace in the state.”
The SSS Director was also quoted to have said he was worried about the violence which some politicians were introducing to the state.
He said, “We won’t allow any political party or individual to destroy the peaceful atmosphere in the state. The state is bigger than any party or individual. We will deal with anybody who violates the provisions of the law.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babafemi, who confirmed the meeting to our correspondent on the telephone, said party representatives signed a Memorandum of Understanding on how to go about their political  activities without violence.
The PPRO added that the parties were warned against engaging in any act that could provoke their opponent.
He said the command was particularly worried by the series of clashes  between supporters of the Action Congress of Nigeria and the Peoples Democratic Party hence the need for the  meeting.
