The over 10 million northerners residing in South-West of Nigeria, on Sunday, vowed not to leave the region despite Boko Haram’s directive that they should return to their home states.
The Sarkin Hausawa of Ibadanland and Oyo State, Alhaji Ahmed Zungeru, while speaking at his 20th year coronation anniversary and turbaning of the new Sarkin Barebari, said that they were desirous of living in a united Nigeria where every citizen would enjoy equal rights and privileges, irrespective of tribe, religion and political belief.
While noting that northerners were in the South-West in pursuit of their legitimate businesses, he said this was not peculiar to them.
He declared that though this legacy was being threatened by the Boko Haram sect, “we are bound to stay in any part of the country.”
Zungeru, who commended President Goodluck Jonathan for giving priority to security of life and property, said the activities of the Boko Haram sect called for urgent dialogue.
He also appealed to the Federal Government to immediately rehabilitate the victims of the Boko Haram menace.
According to him, God did not make a mistake by bringing the Northern part of the country and the South together as a country.
He also called on the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, to address the imbalance in admission of students into the state tertiary institutions.
He observed that members of the Hausa community, had been denied access to education.
According to him, indigene factor has become an obstacle to securing admission into tertiary institutions in the state.
