Anambra rerun: INEC deploys seven RECs

The Independent National Electoral Commission has deployed seven resident electoral commissioners for the conduct of the Anambra South senatorial rerun on Tuesday.
The Supervising REC, Mr. Mike Igini, who addressed the press after an Inter-Agency Security meeting in Awka on Sunday, said the commission recognised Dr. Andy Uba as the candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party for the election.
He said the other candidate included Chief Chuma Nzeribe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, who challenged Uba’s election that was annulled.
Igini said all was set for the election that will take place in seven local government areas, 118 wards and 1669 polling units across the senatorial zone.
Though he said the commission was “unmindful of the chequered history of elections in Anambra State,” Igini said there was nothing unusual for the deployment of the seven RECs and other INEC officials to conduct the election.
He could not explain why the serving REC for Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, was sidelined in the conduct of the election.
Our correspondent learnt that at least 5,000 policemen and other security agents would be deployed to secure the polling units during the election.
