Chairman of a faction within the Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Akin Olowookere, on Thursday said the party might not field any candidate for the October 20 governorship election if its lingering crisis was not resolved.
Olowookere, who raised the alarm while addressing journalists in Akure, noted that there would always be litigation if factions stuck to their guns instead of allowing the next week court verdict to determine the way forward.
He said, “If justice is not allowed to prevail in the April 16 ruling by the Akure High Court over the matter, the crisis may linger and it could extend beyond the October 20 governorship election in the state.
“The implication of this is that our great party may be disallowed from presenting any candidate for the election.”
The factional chairman, who insisted that his group constituted the authentic PDP in the state, noted that the activities of some leaders within the party were capable of forcing members to defect to other parties in the state.
He, however, hinted that his executive had started a “political evangelism” aimed at bringing in more members and stopping those who had made up their minds to defect as a result of the crisis.
He also said those who led the party to the current crisis because of their actions would be expelled by his executive in order to stop them from causing more harm to the party.
Olowookere said the party would have lost more members if not for the respected leaders who had identified with his own executive.
