Fayemi inaugurates roads, water treatment plants

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State on Thursday inaugurated 10 major roads spanning 103 kilometres in fulfilment of the resolve of his administration to make all the communities in the state accessible by 2014.

The governor, according to a statement made available to our correspondent, also inaugurated five water treatment plants to mark the second anniversary of his administration.

The roads, which are located in Ekiti Central Senatorial District, include the 14.3km Erijinyan-Ilawe road; Odo Owa-Oke Ila, 12km; Awo-Iyin, 6.25km; Ikogosi-Efon, 24km; Ado-Ilawe, 11.5km; and Fajuyi-Basiri-Police headquarters, 5km.

Others are Fajuyi-Teaching Hospital road, 1.65km; Ado-Afao road, 10.75km; Ijigbo-Isato, 2km; and Osun-Iloro road, 13km.

Fayemi said the construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of the roads became necessary following their deplorable conditions, which had given motorists nightmarish experiences while traversing them.

According to him, the government decided to award the roads, especially those leading to Ado Ekiti in November 2011 so as to ameliorate the sufferings of motorists and to give the state capital a facelift, even as the Fajuyi–Teaching Hospital road was planned to link the ongoing Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki road with Fajuyi Park.

He said the government was rehabilitating 16 other roads within the town in order to make Ado-Ekiti an enviable state capital.

While inaugurating the Ado-Afao road, the governor said its rehabilitation would undoubtedly be a great relief to motorists playing it, especially those going towards Ikole and the northern part of the state, as it was a shorter link than the Ado-Ifaki road.

Fayemi, who noted that the road was constructed by the administration of former governor Ayo Fayose in 2005, added that it did not last and had become a hide out for miscreants.

He said its rehabilitation would enhance the economic activities of residents along the road.

The five water treatment plants and reservoir inaugurated on Thursday are located at Ipole Iloro, Efon, Ido Ile, Okemesi and Mary Hill, Ado Ekiti.

Fayemi said the projects were to achieve the target of his administration to provide portable water to at least 80 per cent of the state’s population by 2014.

He said concerted efforts were being put in place to ensure that all the four dams in the state become functional as a bulk of the 2013 budget would be devoted to water provision.

Meanwhile, the people of Odo Uro, a community in Iyin Ekiti, are now enjoying a new vista of life following the inauguration of a rural electrification project there by the governor.

The works covered about 0.1km of inter town connection, 1.8km township distribution network, 300KVA transformer and street lighting.

Fayemi said the government realised the importance of electricity supply to the economic and social development of rural communities hence, the decision to accord infrastructural development a pride of place in his administration’s eight-point agenda.

A health centre at Ido Ile and a skills acquisition centre at Iropora Ekiti, which were provided under the State Community and Social Development Agency were also inaugurated.

Speaking on Fayemi’s achievements, the Owa Ooye of Okemesi, Oba Gbadebo Adedeji, has commended the governor and urged him not to be discouraged by criticisms, but should see such as tonic to spur him on to work more for the development of the state.

The traditional ruler lauded Fayemi for the rapid development of the state and even distribution of dividends of democracy that had got to virtually all communities in the state.
