Ghana star Andre Ayew is backing Liberia to qualify to next year’s African Cup of Nations.
The
Lone Star played out their skin to force a 2-2 draw against the Super
Eagles in the first leg of the qualifier to the 2013 African Cup of
Nations at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium over the weekend.
After
coach Kaetu Smith’s charges managed a shock 2-0 win over the Black
Stars in a friendly on Tuesday, the Marseille winger is confident they
can scale the hurdle against the Nigerians in their return encounter.
“I love their spirit and mentality and I believe they can go to Nigeria and cause an upset,” Ayew told reporters.
“I am supporting them to qualify to the Nations Cup because it been a long time since they’ve been there.
“They have a strong team which can surprise any side on a good day.”
The return leg will be played next month in Calabar with the overall winners advancing to the Nations in South Africa next year.
Liberia has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations only twice and last played at the continental showpiece in 2002.
