Tension in Ado Ekiti over robbery scare

The fear of armed robbers forced some commercial banks in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, to hurriedly close on Monday with traders at the Oja Oba market in the town also shutting their shops following the rumour.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the development began to manifest at about 9.30a.m., when some of the banks had already opened to customers and began operations.
In one of the banks visited, a senior staff member told newsmen that they got an order from the state government to suspend operation following the robbery scare.
The official explained that they had “strong intelligence reports” that robbers had laid siege to the state, adding that “there is need for precautionary measure to avert robbery attack.”
Following the development, the police in the state beefed up security around all the banks, mounted police check-points on all the roads leading into the state capital, with commuters being scrutinised.
The increased police presence in the town along with their regular patrol in armoured personnel carriers and vans, further heightened fears of the armed robbery rumour in the town but the acting Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Victor Babayemi, denied the presence of armed robbers in the state.
