Reconsider decision to quit party, politics, Kalu told

The national chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), Chief Sam Nkire, has appealed to  former governor of Abia State and chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees until June 15, 2011, Orji Kalu, to reconsider his decision to quit the party and politics.

Nkire, in a statement on Thursday, said that if Kalu stood by his decision to quit the party and politics to concentrate on the running of his foundation, the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation, it would be a big loss to the PPA.

Nkire, who was reacting to the purported suspension of Kalu by the Abia State chapter of the party, said it was regrettable that the state chapter of the party committed such a blunder at a time that the national leadership was appealing to Kalu to rescind his decision to quit.

He said Kalu informed the leadership of the party in writing after the 2011 senatorial elections that he wanted to quit the party.

In the resignation letter to Nkire, dated June 15, 2011, Kalu wrote: “I write to inform you of my decision to resign as a member of the above named party.

“May I also thank you immensely through this medium for all your support given to me during my period of membership.

“This is to enable me to concentrate fully on my foundation (Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation) which has been duly incorporated.

“Thank you and God bless you all.”

In his reaction to the issue on Thursday, Nkire wrote in his statement: “Let me for the first time react to the purported suspension of Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, first BOT chairman of PPA.

“First of all, let me state that the purported suspension was regrettable, ill-timed and in bad taste.

“Soon after the last senatorial elections in 2011, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu had indicated to me in writing, his decision to resign from active politics in order to concentrate on the activities of his foundation – the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation.

“Since then the leadership of the party has been making entreaties to him to change his mind and resume active participation in the affairs of the party, until this sad development.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the membership of the Chairman of the BOT of any political party (including PPA) can only be determined by the National Executive Committee (NEC), not even by the National Working Committee (NWC), let alone State Working Committee (SWC).
