Why FG renamed UNILAG Moshood Abiola varsity

Further insights emerged on Sunday into the report which the Federal Government relied upon to rename the University of Lagos, Moshood Abiola University of Lagos.

A report put together by the committee which recommended the renaming of University of Lagos indicated that besides the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, there is no other Nigerian who has contributed towards the nation’s education advancement as much as the late MKO Abiola.

It was also indicated in the report that most top universities in the world are named after individuals who have contributed to educational advancement of their communities.

Examples were given of top universities like Havard in the United States of America, Stanford University named after Leyland Stanford in the United Kingdom, John Hopkins University and Duke University, among others, with the report stating that Abiola’s contributions in the area of education tower above all other aspects of human life.

The committee further noted that contributions in the area of education and human development are lifetime and generational contributions which cannot be equated to achievements in sports and recreation.

According to sources, the decision of the Federal Government to hounour the late Chief MKO Abiola with the University of Lagos was never an accidental decision but a decision based on full investigation of his contributions to Nigerian democracy, educational advancement and sporting prowess.

The report stated that Abiola was on record as the only Nigerian whose contributions to education were only second to that of the sage, Chief Awolowo.

Said a source with insights into the report: “He (Abiola) is seen as a Nigerian who supported the growth and rise of men of character, courage and fairness.

“Reports available to government indicated that besides Chief Obafemi Awolowo, no other Nigerian has contributed to the educational advancement of Nigeria more than Abiola.”

“He built educational infrastructure in all institutions in Nigeria including state universities nd polytechnics. No other Nigerian has done that. He built hospitals and others with his money.

“Hs contribution to knowledge through the establishment of concord newspapers which produced many Editors amnd media greats who are conriuting to the development f Nigeria to day is unquantifiable. He did not just establish concord newspapers, he also established community concord, which promoted unity and development of nigerian languages.

“From available records to the government, he gave over 1 million Nigerians scholarships from primary to university. While his contribution in sports were legendary but he was seen to have only used his personality to support sports and whoeever you raise in sports, once he or she dies or leaves the stage that is the end of the story.

“But contributions to educational advancement of persons remain a lifetime and generational gift. The resolution of government was to lok at the area Abiola achieved more both tangibly and intangibly.

“Some had suggested that UNAAB could be named after him, but that would make Abiola only an Abeokuta man which he was not. He was a true nigerian and only a prized asset of FG like UNILAG will do his image a deserved honour.”
