FORMER governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Saidu Dakingari, is set to return to office now, having won the governorship rerun which was held in the state on Saturday.
Dakingari, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled a total of 875,492 votes, about 92 per cent of the total votes cast and was declared winner by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kebbi State, Alhaji Lawal Sulaiman Bilbis.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commissioner, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) candidate, Abubakar Mallam, came a distant second with a total votes of 17,118, followed by the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), who scored a total 4,666 votes.
With this development, the governor-elect is billed to receive his Certificate of Return from INEC in Abuja early this week, after which he would be sworn in to continue with the governance of Kebbi State.
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in Kebbi State, has, meanwhile, reacted to the outcome of the election which it said was peacefully conducted with every political party given a level playing field to feature.
The chairman of the umbrella political parties, Alhaji Boyi Jega, who spoke with the media, said members accepted the outcome of the election and the result declared by INEC which he said they commended for a job well done.
The easy road to victory by Dakingari had earlier been paved by the members of the leading opposition group in Kebbi State; the CPC which returned into the PDP in large number, all pledging loyalty to the man they removed from office through a court process.
The chief financier of the CPC, Alhaji Adamu Aliero, who is also a former governor of Kebbi State, had set the tone for members of the party to embrace the PDP, having formally declared his resolve to rejoin the party which he dumped almost a year ago, at a presidential rally which was held in Birnin-Kebbi a week and half ago.
Since his declaration for the PDP, Aliero and his supporters had been good to the pledge of support they made to Dakingari, as they were present at the campaigns by the governor, most especially the final campaign by the PDP, which featured Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and other members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
The state chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Mansur Shehu, in a chat with Nigerian Tribune, attributed the victory of Dakingari in the election to his hard work, concern for the plight of the downtrodden and his desire to succeed in his political endeavour, a reason he said the people of Kebbi State had been holding him in a high esteem.
He said Dakingari would now address his mind to the greater challenges of raising the standard of living in Kebbi State, much as he would have much breathing space in pursuing developmental initiatives he had outlined.
Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Alhaji Dakingari on his victory in Saturday’s rerun governorship election in Kebbi State.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati in Abuja on Sunday, the president thanked old and returning members of the PDP in Kebbi State for heeding the call by the party’s leadership for reconciliation and unity to ensure that the party’s standard-bearer, Alhaji Dakingari, won overwhelmingly in the election.
The statement said as the governor-elect prepared to return to the governor’s office in Birnin-Kebbi, President Jonathan urged him to do his utmost best to ensure that the people of Kebbi State, who gave him and the PDP a landslide victory, were rewarded with an effective and efficient administration that would deliver good governance and rapid state-wide development.
President Jonathan assured Alhaji Dakingari that the efforts of his incoming administration to continuously improve the living conditions of the people of Kebbi State would receive all possible support and assistance from the Federal Government.
He commended voters in Kebbi State, INEC and its personnel, as well as national security agencies for “playing their parts in ensuring that the rerun election ordered by the Supreme Court was peacefully and successfully conducted.”
Also, President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, on Sunday, congratulated Alhaji Dakingari, saying that his resilience in the face of challenges deserved commendation.
Mark, in a congratulatory message to the governor-elect, noted that the election was fought and won in a free and fair contest.
He said: “Your election has proved doubting Thomases wrong. The people have decided and reposed their trust and confidence in you. It is incumbent on you, therefore, to justify the mandate by working assiduously to improve the economic and infrastructural development of the state. The people expect much from you; put them first in all you do.
“I earnestly implore you to bring your wealth of experience to bear to transform the state and leave a positive legacy that will endure.”
He reminded the governor-elect of the need to bring all stakeholders on board in the onerous task of administering the state.
In the same vein, Mark advised those who lost in the election to accept the result in good faith and join hands with the governor-elect to develop the state, saying that Kebbi State is endowed with enormous potential yearning to be tapped.
