Nasarawa: CPC wins Awe North LG by-election

UMARU Tanko Tunga of the Con-gress for Progressive Change (CPC) has been declared the winner of the state House of Assembly bye-election for Awe-North constituency, with a total votes of 10,448.

Announcing the result of the election in the early hours of Sunday amidst tight security in Awe, the returning officer, Usman Abubakar, also announced that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 3,400; Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), 28 and the All Nigeria’s Peoples Party (ANPP) had 65 votes.

Abubakar further stated that out of 34,707 registered voters, only 14,205 cast their votes during the election, adding that out of this figure, 264 were rejected, leaving 13,941 as the valid votes.

According to him, results in five polling units were cancelled because the ballot boxes for those units were snatched, while thumbprinted ballot papers were found before the commencement of the election.

Reacting, however, candidate of the PDP in the election, Musa Seidu, on Saturday, alleged stealing of four ballot boxes by people suspected to be members of the CPC.

Also, eight corps members serving currently in the state were reported to have been arrested with thumb-printed ballot papers in favor of the CPC.

Nigerian Tribune investigations revealed that the corps members were apprehended by the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and handed over to security-men after making confessional statement.

Reacting to the allegation, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Ahmed Makama, said only one box was reported stolen.

Also, in a telephone interview on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Cornelious Ocholi, said the arrested corps members were still at the police custody at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the PDP, on Sunday, speaking through its state chairman, Chief Yunana Iliya, dissociated itself from the bye-election.
