THE Edo State gubernatorial election scheduled for Saturday, July 14, may spring some surprises as an opinion poll conducted by FastTrack, a Lagos-based public opinion and media research organisation, on Monday, made public the result of its opinion poll for  election with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, General Charles Airhiavbere (retd), emerging the most preferred candidate of a majority of the electorate/respondents whose opinions were sampled.

Executive Director of FasTrack, Mr John Aigboje, said in a statement announcing the outcome of the exercise, that for the purpose of the opinion poll, 6,600 questionnaires were randomly administered to respondents who had attained the 18-year voting age and above in the three senatorial districts.

According to him, “Only 6,000 out of the 6,600 questionnaires were processed at the end of the eight-week polling exercise which ended on Monday, last week, as the respondents provided all the measurable answers that were germane to the analysis of the data supplied.

“We were able to process 2,400 questionnaires in Edo South; 2,000 questionnaires in Edo North and 1,600 questionnaires in Edo Central and the choices were among the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate, Adams Oshiomhole; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Charles Airhiavbere and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate, Solomon Edebiri.

“The analysis of the responses as to whom the respondents would likely vote for on Saturday showed that the candidate of the PDP, General Airhiavbere, was the most preferred in Edo South and Edo Central Senatorial districts while the ACN candidate, Comrade Oshiomhole emerged as the most preferred in Edo North Senatorial district.”

Aigboje stated that “in Edo South, out of the 2,400 respondents, 1,673 respondents representing 69.7 per cent of the population sampled indicated preference for the PDP candidate, one of the leading candidates from the zone; 700 respondents representing 29.2 per cent indicated preference for the ACN candidate while 27 respondents representing 1.1 per cent indicated preference for the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate, Mr Solomon Iyobosa Edebiri.

“In Edo North, out of the 2,000 respondents (comprising 1,200 in Etsako area, 400 in Owan area and 400 in Akoko-Edo area), 1,208 respondents representing 60.4 per cent indicated their preference for the ACN candidate while 778 respondents representing 38.9 per cent indicated preference for the PDP candidate.  14 respondents representing 0.7 per cent indicated preference for the ANPP candidate.

“In Edo Central where 1,600 respondents were sampled, 1,262 representing 78.9 per cent indicated their preference for the PDP candidate while 318 respondents representing 19.9 per cent indicated preference for the ACN candidate.  20 respondents representing 1.2 per cent indicated preference for the ANPP candidate.”

He said that the analysis of the responses, especially where they were asked the reason(s) for their preferences, showed that ethnic consideration and other political factors such as the influence of leaders who are mobilising the followers in the various localities played a significant role in forming the preference(s) of the respondents.
