NIGERIA'S midfielder, Mikel Obi may team up with Camerounian international, Samuel Eto'o at Russian side, Anzhi Makhachkala. The link to the big-spending club is strenghtened by unhappy spells the player has in recent weeks at Chelsea under Portuguese trainer, Andre Villas-Boas.
“Mikel has clearly made up his mind to quit Chelsea and already there have been some moves by Anzhi to have him," a top source told MTNFootball.com
The Russian club has attracted some big names like Eto'o, Roberto Carlos and only recently Yuri Zhirkov left Chelsea to join team.
Mikel’s Chelsea contract still has two more years to run, but lately this season it has become increasingly clear that he may not have a future at the West London club.
Two days ago, he watched from the substitutes bench as Napoli thrashed Chelsea 3-1 at Naples to leave their UEFA Champions League hopes again hanging by the thread.
The 24-year-old Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 after a transfer saga that also involved Manchester United.
He won the English Premier League championship with ‘The Blues’ in the 2009/10 season as well as three winners’ medals in the FA Cup and one such medal in the League Cup.
Meanwhile, Mikel, insists that despite the 3-1loss at Napoli in the first leg UEFA Champions League Round of 16, Chelsea can turn the table against the Italian club in the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
“It was a painful loss. We did well in the game but Napoli took their chances well. Not that we played badly, we created a lot of scoring chances but we were unlucky not to have scored as many as four goals in Naples,” he said.
“And I am also saying that we are not out of Champions League. We are motivated to win the return leg and move to the next round of the competition.
“We will correct our mistakes from the first leg when they come to London. I am sure we will qualify to next stage.”
