Former head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has decried the state of insecurity of the nation, saying that the spate of bombings being experienced in some places was unnecessarily destroying the country.
General Abubakar said this on Thursday, when he received in audience the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Mrs Desire Nsirim, at his Minna residence.
He said Niger State used to be peaceful until recently, when Suleja came under bomb attacks, adding that the state was still relatively peaceful despite such attacks.
Abubakar said the security situation had overstretched the police, adding that there was the need for government to give them more logistics and equipment to deal with the security challenges.
The former head of state commended the police for being on top of the security challenges in the country, adding that he sympathised with the rank and file of the police that now had to be on the beat 24 hours under the rain and sun.
While wishing the commissioner well in her duty in the state, the former Nigerian leader assured her of all necessary support in the course of her work in the state.
The commissioner, in her response, said she was on the visit to seek the support of the former head of state and other prominent citizens of the state, in her bid to ensure effective policing of the state.
She said efforts at securing lives and property in Suleja were yielding results, adding that the residents of the city, local government officials and the emir of Suleja were helping the police in ensuring lasting peace in the area.
