Journalists, lawmakers, Red Cross officials escape death in Plateau

A member of the Plateau State House of Assembly, representing Riyom Constituency, Honourable Daniel Dem and 12 journalists narrowly escaped death by on Wednesday in Kak village in Riyom Local Government Area of the state, when some group of Fulani herdsmen struck in the area.

It will be recalled that the entire local government has been under siege for the past one month as a result of persistent attacks by people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, who had sacked close to 20 villages in the area.

The journalists at about 10:30a.m. were at Kak village trying to gather information on the crisis rocking the council from the survivors, when the rampaging Fulani herdsmen struck, shooting sporadically into the air. The journalists, the lawmaker and officials of Red Cross at the village abandoned their vehicles and ran as far as their legs could fetch them.

Some of the journalists working for electronic media also abandoned their cameras and other things to enable them run fast as the Fulani were closing in on them. The mobile policemen who were just arriving the village when the marauders stuck took a French leave along with the journalists.

It was learnt that the Fulani struck again on noticing that the villagers were back to their abode five days after they were sacked and their valuable property destroyed. In the previous attack, no fewer than 150 residential houses were burnt and 8 people killed in the village.
