Suspected Fulani herdsmen kill serving senator, state legislator in Plateau

Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Sunday shot and killed a serving senator, Dr. Gyang Dantong, and the lawmaker representing Barkin Ladi in the state house of assembly, Gyang Fulani, at a mass burial in Maseh, Plateau State.
Dantong, who is representing Plateau North, and Fulani, who is the Majority Leader of the state house of assembly, were killed along with over 50 people by the herdsmen around 2.30p.m.
The incident followed the earlier gruesome discovery of 50 corpses in a church in the area.
They were the corpses of members of a church said to have fled an onslaught by Fulani herdsmen.
The lawmakers were attending the mass burial of the 50 victims when they were murdered.
A string of attacks on Saturday in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas led to the killing of over 20 people.
The latest attacks come as a setback to efforts by the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), to restore peace to the troubled state.
More details later.
