An end to the perennial water problem in Oyo South Senatorial District is in sight, as the lawmaker representing the District, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) implored contractors handling seven different water projects in the area to expedite action to ensure timely completion of the projects.
The people of Oyo South Senatorial District were full of excitement when the lawmaker, paid an unscheduled inspection visit to the sites of the ongoing Solar Automated water projects worth over N20m.
The seven water projects visited were located at Oke-Tunu, Ibadan North Local Government Area, Itamaya, Ibadan South West Local Government Area, Kudeti, Ibadan South East Local Government Area, Inalende, Ibadan North West Local Government Area, Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area, Lanlate, Ibarapa East Local Government Area and an existing water project at Opoyoesa which was also renovated by the lawmaker to ensure that the problem of water in the area is solved.
At every project site visited, members of the community trooped out in large numbers to give rousing welcome to the lawmaker, and to show genuine appreciation to the lawmaker for solving the problem of water in their community.
Leaders of the community, including ACN members who were excited with the laudable projects were on hand to receive the lawmaker and members of his entourage.
Pa Olalere Fadugba, JP, the chairman, Ifedapo Landlords’ Association, Oke-Tunu area of Ibadan expressed delight that his community has been remembered. People rolled out the drums and danced to the admiration of the visitors who were overwhelmed with the people’s enthusiasm on the water project sited at the Christ Apostolic Church compound, Oke-Tunu for the benefit of the community. He praised Senator Lanlehin for his commitment to the people’s welfare, even as he urged him “not to relent in his efforts to make the people comfortable.”
Pa Fadugba, who said he was a former leader in the Action Group (AG) in Ibadan during Chief Obafemi Awolowo days said: “It is certain that the good old days are here again.”
While expressing gratitude to the lawmaker on behalf of the landlords in the area, the 87-year-old community leader promised to ensure that the borehole, when completed, is put to good use by members of the community.
At Opoyoesa area of Ibadan, scores of market men and women expressed their happiness that the hitherto moribund borehole has been renovated by the lawmaker.
According to Alhaja Modinat Adekola, a resident of the area, the borehole has been there for many years without water.
She said: “We thank God that He sent someone to save us from trekking to distant places in search of water daily. Many governments have come and gone, yet none of them had ever thought it wise to repair this borehole that has been a source of water to hundreds of family in this community.”
Most of the water projects which have reached between 70 and 90 per cent completion stage, Newsextra learnt, were initiated and sponsored by Senator Lanlehin in fulfilment of his campaign promises to the people of the district. Speaking at one of the sites, Senator Lanlehin said it was his hope that thousands of residents in the district would benefit from the projects, even as he promised to bring more dividends of democracy to the people especially at the grassroots.
Senator Lanlehin, who is the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on National Planning, Economic Affairs and Poverty Alleviation , further said that the seven water projects were conceived to alleviate the hardship being experienced by the people.
“It is my obligation to the people who gave their trust and mandate to me to ensure that more and more dividends of democracy come their way .Water is life and besides, with potable water, sickness and other diseases associated with water would be minimised if not eradicated. This is just the beginning of good things to come for the people of the district,” the lawmaker said.
